Project Description

The environmental health baseline studies for the Beetaloo Sub-basin SREBA conducted a sub-project to determine a regional baseline for air quality. This study established baseline for regional air quality and dust levels, and collated existing air quality data to identify sources of natural and other air pollutants and characterise their variability. This sub-project was led by GHD.

Abstract

This final report summarises the air quality monitoring program implemented to establish baseline air quality within the Beetaloo Sub-Basin, and initial findings. Measurements from current air quality monitoring stations in the NT were reviewed, but are not likely to be sufficiently representative of the air quality within the SREBA Beetaloo biophysical study area. Five air quality monitoring stations were set up within the study area at Manbulloo, Mataranka, Bullwaddy Conservation Reserve, Daly Waters and Elliott, to measure key air pollutants and meteorological parameters. Pollutants measured were selected based on the expected emissions from onshore gas development, and include particulate matter (PM), both suspended particles and deposited dust, and gases (NO2, SO2, H2S, VOCs and aldehydes). The monitoring methods for each pollutant including details of quality control procedures undertaken are outlined. Results indicate that in general areas to the north of the Beetaloo Sub-basin (Manbulloo and Mataranka) experience higher PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations than areas to the south, likely due to the increased bushfire activity in the north. Elliott had the lowest observed PM concentrations throughout the year. Dust deposition was below the adopted standard throughout the monitoring period for all locations except for one monthly exceedance at Mataranka. Gas sampling indicated that concentrations of NO2, SO2, H2S, formaldehyde and BTX were below the adopted standards throughout the monitoring period at all locations.
