Project Description

The water quality and quantity studies for the Beetaloo Sub-basin SREBA assessed groundwater chemistry and levels, and better characterised aquifer parameters, intra- and inter-aquifer connectivity, recharge and discharge processes for regional aquifers overlying the Beetaloo Sub-basin. This study was led by the Northern Territory Government Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security, Water Resources Division.

Abstract

The report seeks to provide an updated overview of groundwater levels in the primary aquifers of the Cambrian Limestone Aquifer (CLA) system across the extent of its two major southern regional groundwater flowpath regimes, which overlie the Beetaloo Sub-Basin. The two regimes divide the CLA system into eastern and western portions, with groundwaters largely flowing in a north-westerly direction to discharge into the respective Roper and Flora rivers. Recent standing water level (SWL) measurements taken from the Anthony Lagoon Formation, Gum Ridge Formation, Montejinni Limestone and Tindall Limestone aquifers (collectively known as the CLA) have been combined to produce potentiometric surface (groundwater elevation) and depth to groundwater maps spanning the extent of the two flow regimes with data from various sources utilised from the last five years. This overview will help to provide an informative and reliable tool for guiding the effective and sustainable use of groundwater within the extended Beetaloo Sub-Basin region through the provision of an updated baseline characterisation of flow dynamics and mechanisms within its primary aquifers.
