Project Description

The water quality and quantity studies for the Beetaloo Sub-basin SREBA assessed groundwater chemistry and levels, and better characterised aquifer parameters, intra- and inter-aquifer connectivity, recharge and discharge processes for regional aquifers overlying the Beetaloo Sub-basin. This study was led by the Northern Territory Government Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security, Water Resources Division.

Abstract

This report supports the Northern Territory Government's Beetaloo Sub-basin Strategic Regional Environmental and Baseline Assessment (SREBA) Project 4 - Water Quality and Quantity studies for the Beetaloo Sub-basin by establishing a groundwater baseline. Actual evapotranspiration and precipitation were quantified using remote sensing at four groundwater spring sites (Flora River spring, Mataranka Springs Complex, Top Springs, and Hot Springs Valley). The relationship between these two parameters was investigated over time to provide insights into associated hydrological processes, with precipitation minus actual evapotranspiration being described as excess water. The parameters' spatial patterns and temporal trends, including seasonal, annual, and long-term trends (Feb 2000 – Feb 2022) have been evaluated and presented. A decreasing trend of excess water throughout the study sites was observed, especially after 2011 and was more pronounced at the northern sites (Flora River spring and Mataranka Springs Complex). The evapotranspiration flux and excess water baseline outlined in this report provides an opportunity to close the water balance when other components of the hydro(geo)logical cycle are considered and accordingly shall contribute towards assessment of any impact of proposed onshore gas activities on groundwater.
