Project Description

The water quality and quantity studies for the Beetaloo Sub-basin SREBA assessed groundwater chemistry and levels, and better characterised aquifer parameters, intra- and inter-aquifer connectivity, recharge and discharge processes for regional aquifers overlying the Beetaloo Sub-basin. This study was led by the Northern Territory Government Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security, Water Resources Division.

Abstract

These works were undertaken as part of the Northern Territory Government’s (NTG) commitment to carry out Water Quality and Quantity baseline investigations to guide the development of a Strategic Regional Environmental and Baseline Assessment (SREBA) for the Beetaloo Sub-basin region. The monitoring bores were constructed for increasing the understanding of hydrodynamics associated with aquifers overlying the Beetaloo Sub-basin and associated with the draft Georgina Wiso Water Allocation Plan, and were primarily focused on the following knowledge gaps and processes: 1) expand the monitoring network for groundwater levels and quality; 2) improve the coverage of hydrostratigraphic data (e.g., gamma logs); and 3) establish sites for pumping tests to assess hydraulic connection between primary aquifers. Drilling activities focused on locations along the Carpentaria Highway, Tablelands Highway and Barkly Stock Route in the Georgina Basin and near the township of Newcastle Waters and along the Buchannan Highway in the Wiso Basin. These works comprised the second stage of SREBA drilling investigations, with the initial round undertaken in 2020 focused on the Sturt Plateau (see Short, 2021) and final investigations due for completion in 2022/2023.
