Project Description

The water quality and quantity studies for the Beetaloo Sub-basin SREBA assessed groundwater chemistry and levels, and better characterised aquifer parameters, intra- and inter-aquifer connectivity, recharge and discharge processes for regional aquifers overlying the Beetaloo Sub-basin. This study was led by the Northern Territory Government Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security, Water Resources Division.

Abstract

A series of down-hole gamma log cross-sections were constructed to examine the presence of aquitards within the Cambrian Limestone Aquifer. The sections were used to determine the extent, continuity and thickness of siltstone/shale/mudstone beds within the sequence. The results were ground-truthed by comparing lithologies from cored drillholes and drill cuttings to the interpreted marker beds on the gamma logs. The main conclusions were that siltstones in the Anthony Lagoon Formation of the Georgina Basin are likely act as aquitards for the interbedded dolostone aquifers of the same formation. They are also likely to restrict or prevent vertical movement of groundwater between the Upper CLA (Anthony Lagoon Formation) and the underlying Lower CLA (Gum Ridge Formation). Of the four marker beds delineated within the Gum Ridge Formation, only the lowermost two were considered likely to act as aquitards due to their greater thicknesses. The lowermost marker however has very limited extent within the study area and lies directly on the underlying Kalkarindji Volcanics Suite.
